Genre Research

1. Suspense
2. Suspenseful movies usually deal with a crisis events to hook the reader and keep the story rolling. In this genre what is at stake is stated in the beginning of the movie. Good suspenseful movies have a strong/developed protagonist and developing creative story developments that lead to a certain outcome. In this genre viewers usually have good point of view from the protagonist to create a connection that creates more tension when the protagonist is at risk. This genre usually has a music playlist that goes along with the story line, it is usually intense music that start to make the audience grasp their seats for what might be coming next.
3.Suspense is a genre that looks to create a connection between the character/s and the audience. Once the connection is made the audience will be more intrigued and involved to see what the outcome of the character’s path contains. The audience is then invested to see if the character gets what it wants in the end, only when they know what the character wants they will understand what’s at stake. Now, suspense is build when danger approaches the character. When a character they have built a connection with is in peril, it doesn’t always have to be life or death situation it can be the well-being of themselves as well as other factors, it’s when the tension starts to build. The suspense is the anticipation of what might or might not come. One technique used in this genre is promising something will happen. When a promise is made the audience is then waiting to see what will happen; therefore, the audience will be dying to know what comes next and with the added danger a story is born. Cinema nowadays is filled with quick cuts and fast paced scenes in order to create a professional looking film. In films the moments that stakes are highest in is when shots and editing should be slowed down. Both techniques I mentioned above can create suspense, but the second one allows the building of the plot towards the climax to build up. This helps establish the anxious nature of the character in a specific situation, which then passes to the audience since they have a connection to the character. A cheesy, yet successful technique that can be used is pulling back the camera from a relatively close shot of the character right before the climax.
4. Suspenseful movies are marketed through social media channels, billboards, and viral campaigns. But the main method used is trailers. The feeling these trailers leave compared to others is the secret to why they draw the attention of the audience. Most of suspenseful trailers leave you feeling confused and curios on what just happened and what will happen next. This strategy is effective in giving away the type of movie it is and it attracts mainly viewers that are interested in this genre. If an important actor is playing a role in this movie, the movie will also be advertise with the actor to also attract the fan base of them. When these strategies are put together it increases the audience that will go watch these types of movies.
5. Get Out (2017)- Get Out uses some of the techniques I mentioned above. From the promotion of the movie through a trailer that keeps you questioning as well as the promotion of an important person that took a major role in the movie. In this movie it is mainly revolved around a black individual that is in a strange scenario. By slowly introducing risk to this character the movie begins to get more and more suspenseful and the audience begins to wonder what will happen next. This movie is a great representation of a great suspense film.
6. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)- Also uses a trailer that leaves everyone that watched it confused. At first the trailer started out somewhat jolly but then started to turn for the worse. This movie also builds up a relationship between the audience and the protagonist. This movie also introduces what is at stake early on so the audience is very aware of what is at stake can be lost at any time.
